Water consumption is one of the biggest challenges in maintaining golf courses and gardens, especially in regions with a Mediterranean climate and prolonged periods of drought. In the context of golf in Spain, water use is increasingly managed responsibly, incorporating non-conventional resources such as reclaimed and desalinated water.

At INFINITUM, we are committed to responsible and efficient solutions that are more environmentally friendly, without compromising the quality, beauty and health of our green spaces. Here’s how we tackle this challenge.
 

Reclaimed water: A responsible resource for irrigation

Our resort and golf courses cover extensive hectares of natural land, which INFINITUM respects and cares for with the highest commitment. Irrigating these large areas responsibly is one of the major sustainability challenges we face.

For this reason, we operate our own desalination plant, which is key to ensuring eco-sustainable irrigation and reducing the environmental impact of our activities. Most of the irrigation for the INFINITUM Beach Club gardens and golf courses uses reclaimed water from the wastewater treatment plant (EDAR). For golf courses, this water goes through a process of osmosis and blending, which ensures the quality needed to maintain grass and green areas in optimal conditions without using drinking water.

But how exactly does this water regeneration process work? As the saying goes, a picture is worth a thousand words. That’s why we share this video showing the internal process of our desalination plant and how we optimize irrigation according to grass needs and the season, ensuring responsible water use across all our facilities, even in years of drought.
 

Innovation and technology that reduce water consumption

Technological advances allow golf course irrigation to be managed efficiently and in harmony with the ecosystem. Spain is now the leading European country in reclaimed water use for golf course irrigation.

In recent years, many golf courses in Spain have adopted measures to reduce water consumption and INFINITUM is one of them. To minimize water use and environmental impact, we have implemented concrete actions such as:

• Selection of adapted varieties: We prioritize grasses with low water demand and varieties resistant to heat and drought. For golf courses, Bermuda Tifway 419 is highlighted for its salt tolerance and quick regrowth.
• Smart irrigation systems: Technologies apply water selectively based on real needs. Atmospheric moisture sensors automatically adjust irrigation according to environmental conditions, optimizing water savings.
• Optimization of water resources: Reclaimed water undergoes osmosis and blending processes, ensuring it meets the optimal quality required to maintain healthy green surfaces.

Our desalination plant is a strategic infrastructure within this sustainable vision. By using desalinated and reclaimed water, we significantly reduce reliance on drinking water and protect natural resources.

Water for irrigation goes through advanced treatment processes that respect soil balance and biodiversity, optimizing every drop according to seasonal and land needs.
